ADR 0007: The desktop app stays on SQLite with no Postgres dependency

Status: Accepted Date: 2026-10-23 Scope: Symphony Deciders: Ravindra Boddipalli

Context

Hosted Symphony needs faster reads and must scale to 1000+ organizations without losing data when a container stops (Symphony’s docs/DATA_DURABILITY.md). The desktop app (Tauri) ships one SQLite file per user and works offline.

Decision

The desktop app keeps running on SQLite alone. No hosted-data decision (PostgreSQL, orbit-rs, replication) may add a Postgres or orbit-rs requirement to the desktop build. The Store abstraction is what lets hosted use other backends.

Consequences

  • Hosted-only backends stay behind Cargo features (postgres, mysql, duckdb) that the desktop build does not enable.
  • Any sync between desktop and a hosted tenant is a separate decision.

Canonical wording

The desktop app runs on SQLite alone.

Verification

The desktop build compiles and its tests pass without the postgres feature.
