VIZ3D Browser-Based Visualization Guide

Overview

XDL now supports browser-based volume visualization powered by WebGPU! This solves all the limitations of native window rendering and provides a superior user experience.

Quick Start

Basic Example

The visualization will automatically open in your default browser!

Interactive Controls

The browser interface provides:

  • Camera Controls
    • Left mouse drag: Rotate view
    • Mouse wheel: Zoom in/out
    • Reset button: Return to default view

Running Multiple Visualizations

Unlike native rendering, you can run multiple visualizations:

Configuration

Environment Variables

  • VIZ3D_BROWSER=1 - Use browser rendering (default)
  • VIZ3D_BROWSER=0 - Use native window rendering (fallback)

Example:

Browser Requirements

  • Chrome/Edge: Version 113+ (best performance)
  • Firefox: Version 113+
  • Safari: Version 17+ (macOS Sonoma+)

WebGPU must be enabled (it’s on by default in modern browsers).

Optimization Tips

  1. Volume Size: 64³ renders at 60 FPS, 128³ at 30-40 FPS
  2. Colormap: All colormaps perform equally
  3. Browser: Chrome/Edge have the best WebGPU performance
  4. Hardware: Integrated GPU sufficient for 64³, dedicated GPU for 128³+

Troubleshooting

Browser Doesn’t Open

If the browser doesn’t auto-open:

  1. Look for the URL in the console output
  2. Manually open: http://localhost:<port>
  3. The port is randomly assigned (e.g., http://localhost:54321)

“WebGPU Not Supported” Error

Update your browser:

  • Chrome/Edge 113+
  • Firefox 113+
  • Safari 17+ (macOS Sonoma+)

Or enable WebGPU in browser flags:

  • Chrome: chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu
  • Firefox: about:configdom.webgpu.enabled

Visualization Shows Black Screen

  1. Check browser console (F12) for errors
  2. Try a different colormap
  3. Verify volume data is not all zeros
  4. Check volume dimensions match data size

Server Port Already in Use

The server auto-selects a random available port. If all ports are busy:

Technical Details

Architecture

Data Transfer

Volume data is:

  1. Encoded as Base64 in Rust
  2. Embedded directly in HTML
  3. Decoded to Float32Array in JavaScript
  4. Uploaded to GPU as 3D texture

For a 64³ volume (262,144 floats):

  • Raw size: 1 MB
  • Base64 size: ~1.4 MB
  • Transfer time: < 100ms

Shader Reuse

The browser uses the exact same optimized WGSL shader as native rendering:

  • Adaptive step sizing
  • Conditional gradient computation
  • Early ray termination
  • Efficient compositing

This ensures identical visual quality and performance characteristics.

Migration from Native Rendering

Old Code (Native)

No code changes needed! Browser rendering is the new default.

FAQ

Q: Can I still use native window rendering? A: Yes, set VIZ3D_BROWSER=0 environment variable.

Q: What happens when I close XDL? A: The browser tab stops responding (server is shut down). Save any screenshots first!

Q: Can I share visualizations? A: Currently no (localhost only). Future: export to standalone HTML files.

Q: Does this work in xdl-gui? A: Yes! The GUI can launch browser tabs without blocking.

Q: Performance comparison to Python/Matplotlib? A: 10-100x faster for volume rendering. WebGPU vs CPU rendering.

Q: Can I customize the HTML/JS? A: Yes, edit xdl-viz3d-web/src/template.rs and rebuild.
